The Tibetan antelope,the so-called plateau spirit,lives in the uninhabited Kekexili region in Tibet and is listed in China as a class one rare wild animal.
Fifty years ago,there were about one million Tibetan antelopes in Kekexili but they have been brought to the brink of extinction by years of poaching.
From 1990 to 1998,about 20,000 Tibetan antelopes were shot.Tibetan antelope products sell for a high price in the international market.The price tag for a Tibetan antelope shawl ranges from US$11,000 to US$40,000.
There are now only about 50,000 Tibetan antelopes left.The Chinese authorities took action against the illegal hunting in 1999.
There are now natural protection zones staffed with people to look after the animals.These efforts appear to be helping as Tibetan antelopes can now be seen along the Qinghai-Tibet highways.
